Free Summer Reading registration May 28 at area Libraries
Registration for the 2013 summer reading program begins Tuesday, May 28, at all Jackson-George Regional Library System locations. The reading program for teens and children is designed to help them discover the pleasure of reading. This year "Dig Into Reading" will let children enjoy a world of adventures and find fun in reading during the summer.
Summer Reading for Adults too!!
Again for 2013, all branch libraries will host free summer reading programs for adults. A full slate of programs are planned - there is something for everyone!. See the schedule here.
Libraries to close for Memorial Day - Monday, May 27
The eight branches of the Jackson-George Regional Library System will be closed Monday, May 27, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
The branches located in the communities of East Central, Gautier, Lucedale, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, St. Martin and Vancleave, will reopen Tuesday, May 28, at regular hours.
Ocean Springs Library hosts Family Game Night - May 28
Families and friends are invited to Family Game Night at the Ocean Springs Municipal Library on Tuesday on May 28, from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m.
A variety of games will be available for play in the Meeting Room. Families with children of all ages are invited. Classic board games from Candyland to Clue will be available for play.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Ocean Springs Municipal Library.

Sign Language Classes at Gautier Library - Mondays & Thursdays
Sign Language classes are being offered at the Gautier Public Library on Mondays and Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. The classes are free and open to anyone interested.
Jean Stephens will be teaching these very popular classes. She has been teaching sign language for many years in Mississippi and in other states in the south.
Anyone interested, age eight and up, should call the Gautier Public Library to register - 497-4531. Classes are limited to eighteen and will fill up quickly. Each participant needs to bring a three-ring binder and notebook paper.
The library is located at 2100 Library Lane next to the Jackson County Community College.
Paper Crafting classes offered at St. Martin Library - May 23
The St. Martin Public Library will host special "Paper Crafting" classes with Marjorie Michaud twice in May.
"Envelopes & Gift Boxes," will be held on Thursday, May 23, from 4 to 6 p.m.
The free programs will show how to make paper projects using paper. Attendees can make decorative items as gifts or home decorations.
Register by calling the library at 392-3250. Supplies will be furnished by the instructor. Class size is limited. All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Ocean Springs Library schedules Fairytale Movies in May 23th - 30th
The Ocean Springs Municipal Library will again host weekly movie showings for free at the library. This month’s features will be popular movies about classic fairytale features.
Scheduled start time will be 6 p.m. each Thursday on May 23, and May 30.
Friends of the Library will also provide refreshments for movie fans. All movies that are scheduled are rated PG-13. Children age 10 and under must be accompanied by parent or adult.

Library System offers Morningstar Investment Research Center on-line
Just in time for Tax Season, cardholders of the Jackson-George Regional Library System will be able to get a Post-Tax Financial Tune-Up with Morningstar Investment Research Center at the online website.
Tax season can be an opportunity to evaluate financial decisions made during the past 12 months. Reviewing how investment choices affect taxes, ensuring objectives are being met, and possibly rebalancing a portfolio are all valuable post-tax exercises. However, finding the right blend of investments that take into account stage of life and investing objectives requires updated and comprehensive investment research.
This subscription service is offered free of charge to library patrons. Gain access to Morningstar at www.jgrls.org/morningstar.htm and is available to one user at a time. A valid Jackson-George Regional Library card is required. To get a library card, visit any branch in the library system.
The library's website provides 24-hour remote access to Morningstar Investment Research Center. With a library card, patrons can gain access to current stock and fund information from home or office.
To help people achieve their financial goals, the Library System offers free access to the high-quality, up-to-the-minute data of Morningstar Investment Research Center, which includes reports on more than 35,000 stocks, mutual funds, and exchange-traded funds. Library patrons can also gain access to proprietary analysis of 4,000 stocks and mutual funds, stock and mutual fund screening tools, and Portfolio X-Ray, which enables users to measure asset mix, sector weightings, and portfolio statistics.
Training seminars, interactive investing courses, and a glossary of investing terms are available on Morningstar Investment Research Center to help you sharpen your investing skills under the "help" link.

Vancleave Library offers Club for "Bookaholics" - May 1
The Vancleave Public Library is inviting anyone interested in forming a new book club to join them on Monday, May 1, beginning at 1 p.m. The club will continue meeting every first Monday each month.
Those who attended the Adult Summer Reading programs will enjoy this new club! Patrons may bring a snack or lunch and bring a friend, meet with others who like to share their good reads and have fun.
Tea or lemonade will be provided by the Friends of the Vancleave Public Library.

Friends of the Moss Point Library schedule monthly meetings
Anyone interested in joining a great civic-minded community group are invited to become a member of the Friends of the Moss Point Library. The Friends group will hold their monthly meeting on Monday, February 4, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ina Thompson Moss Point Library.
The Friends group meets on the first Monday of each month and wants to encourage more local adults to attend and see what the Friends group is up to.
Friends of the Library are made up of local residents who know that any community becomes enriched when its libraries are improved. They lobby for and help raise funds to support enhancement and expansion of public library services. Many Friends work directly with the Library staff as volunteers, helping deliver library services on a personal, one-to-one basis.
Anyone can join a Friends group by completing a membership form available at the library. Members will also be notified of meeting dates and other library related events.

Jackson-George Regional Library System brings ebooks to patrons through Axis 360 Digital Media Library
The Jackson-George Regional Library System now has downloadable eBooks for patrons with a valid library card. This new lending service is partially funded under the federal Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Mississippi Library Commission for the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The new Digital Library Materials catalog is available from the library website at www.jgrls.org/axis360.htm with instructions on using this new service. All eBooks may be checked out for up to three weeks and are limited to two selections per patron.
Axis 360 is a revolutionary digital media platform, providing libraries and their patrons with a state-of-the-art system for circulating enhanced digital content and Blio, the ground-breaking eReading software.
Patrons will enjoy the dynamic presentation of titles on the Axis 360 Magic Wall, the ease of locating books of interest on 'Browse by Subject' pages, as well as guidance provided by book reviews and recommendations for further reading.
Patrons will need to download the free Blio eReader software which is available for most popular eReader devises. The software is compatible with Windows for PC, iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch), Kindle Fire and some Android devises. Downloadable instructions and an informational video can be found on the Axis 360 page.
The library system is also asking patrons to fill out a user survey about ebooks as part of a state-wide effort to collect information. The seven-question survey is available on the library website as well as at branch libraries.

This year "Dream Big: Read!" programming will let children enjoy nighttime themed adventures and enjoy the fun of reading.

Vancleave Library offers Aspiring Writers Workshop
The library will host three national authors of several popular subjects; paranormal-romance-suspense author Cynthia Eden, Katie Reus, and historical romance author Manda Collins will talk about their latest novels and will sign books. They will also give advice on polishing writing skills and answer questions about breaking into the highly competitive publishing business.
 Library System hires new Computer Trainer: Free Computer Classes available
The public is invited to register for free computer classes at branch libraries of the Jackson-George Regional Library System. Classes will be held every month at different library locations in Jackson and George counties.
Recently, the library system hired Janet Head Beatty as the computer trainer for public and staff training. She will facilitate all computer classes at branch libraries and work to provide training with Microsoft Office Suite software as well.
Janet earned her Bachelor's degree at the University of Southern Mississippi and taught previously at the Ocean Springs High School at the Business & Computer Technology center. Organizations she has served were Future Business Leaders of America, DECA and others. She is married to Robert and lives in Moss Point with their son and daughter.
New class schedules are posted on the library website each month. Location and class size vary from week to week. Registration is required in advance. A valid JGRLS library card is required before registering for any class.
March classes include: Introduction to Microsoft Word, Introduction to the Internet, and Click your way to work - which requires basic computer knowledge. Classes will be offered at the Pascagoula Public Library and Lucedale-George County Public Library.
Registration opens on Monday each week at 9:00 a.m. for the following week's classes. Patrons wishing to take a class in Jackson County may register in person at the Pascagoula Public Library or by calling 769-3060, and pressing 1. Patrons wishing to take a class in George County may register in person at the Lucedale-George County Public Library or by calling 601-947-2123 at anytime or day after registration has been opened.

to host 2012 Annual Chocolate Tasting Event
Recently, the library offered attendees to taste a variety of chocolate delicacies prepared by professionals, amateurs and Friends of the Vancleave Public Library on Thursday, April 19.
Local bakeries and volunteer dessert makers will break out their secret recipes, create an amazing array of light and dark delights, and donate a delectable selection of their own specialty confections to be showcased and served. See the slideshow here!

Vancleave Library Friends offer Toner Recycling
Anyone with unwanted printer toner cartridges now have a place to recyle used toner packs thanks to the Friends of the Vancleave Public Library.
Starting this month, anyone may drop off empty inkjet cartridges at the Vancleave Public Library located at 12604 Highway 57 near the schools.
Branch manager Yvonne Parton said, "The Friends group will even make a little money as a fundraising project. They will receive up to $4 for each cartridge recycled. It’s a great way to save our environment and help our library."

East Central Library schedules Book Club meeting - call 588-6263
Adults interested in joining a new "Love My Library" Book Club is invited to attend the next meeting each first Thursday at 12:30 p.m., at the East Central Public Library.
Refreshments will be served by the Friends of the East Central Public Library in the meeting room.
The new club is being started in part due to the huge response from the Adult Summer Reading programs in June and July of this year. The EC Club offers an opportunity for anyone interested in books and book reviews to discuss what they have been reading and enjoy good fellowship with fellow enthusiasts. General topics are also welcomed such as authors they like and dislike or authors they've met or wish to meet.

Local Libraries offer "MANGO" Language Learning On-Line
All branches of the Jackson-George Regional Library System will be a great place to go to learn a foreign language. The library system has purchased a subscription to Mango Languages for on-line users. Anyone with a library card may access the new, web based service free of charge.
Mango Languages is now available and includes a variety of resources to help patrons learn practical conversation skills for languages spoken all around the world. Mango Complete Courses is a 100-lesson course that is designed to provide a deep understanding of a language and its culture. It is available in 31 foreign language and 14 ESL courses.
The courses utilize an engaging interface and easy, intuitive interactive tools to deliver practical conversational skills and valuable cultural insight for a foreign language. Lessons include strategically placed memory-building exercises to help users remember what they are learning in addition to critical thinking exercises, which help them to intuitively understand the language and adapt it to similar conversations. Mango Languages is completely self-paced and the time it takes to build fluency is different from person to person.
