Libraries Host "Peppermint Parade" Programs for Kids
The Jackson-George Regional Library System will present special "Peppermint Parade: Song and Dance Revue" storytime shows at branch libraries throughout Jackson and George counties.
Registration for the 2011 summer reading program continues at all Jackson-George Regional Library System locations. The reading program for children is designed to help kids discover the pleasure of reading. This year’s theme, "One World Many Stories" will let children explore other cultures around the globe and enjoy the fun of reading.
A full schedule of events will keep grade school kids active and interested in reading all summer long. All summer programs bring dozens of free events right to your neighborhood; puppets, story-times, special guests and so much more - guaranteed to entertain young and old alike.
Each branch library hosts special programs each week which are completely free. Weekly programs for each of three age groups will include; pre-school storytime, grade-school programs, and special travel themed "You Are Here..." Teen programs.
"Every year more and more children are reached by our programs," said JGRLS Youth Services Coordinator Bethany Carlisle. "We always have families moving to our area and we encourage them to get a library card and enjoy the fun and learning activities. This year, we are expecting larger than normal attendance at our programs because more families are vacationing near home."
A reading record is filled out for each child who registers. Each time the child visits the library, the books he or she has read will be recorded on their own reading record. Certificates of completion will be presented to those who meet a reading goal.
When children are free to choose their own reading materials, wonderful things happen. Often children who are resistant to reading books during the school year find a topic of interest and read about things they like over the summer. These free, voluntary reading experiences encourage children to spend increased time with books.
Parents of younger children are urged to enroll their preschool children in the Read-To-Me programs and to attend the regular story time activities at the libraries. A wide selection of new picture books are available that parents can select to read to their children.

The Jackson-George Regional Library System will present "The Legend of Santa Gator" puppet shows at branch libraries in December.

Library Program “Between the Lions” Teaches Reading Skills to Children
The Pascagoula Public Library will be participating in a nationally recognized literacy program for preschool children. It introduces children to the Emmy Award-winning PBS KIDS TV series “Between the Lions” in print format.
The program will begin on October 3, at 10 a.m., and continue during regular Storytime programs every Wednesday at the library in the story-pit.
Children who participate will be given free Between the Lions Cub Cards and Between the Lions Designated Reader cards will be given to parents and care givers.
The primary sponsor of this project is Entergy and includes Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Mississippi Library Commission, Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs, and Foundation for Public Broadcasting in Mississippi.
Between the Lions is an award-winning PBS television series that premiered in April 2000, and is designed to help kids ages 4 to 7 learn to read. Unique among the hundreds of programs aimed at children, this action/animated show is based on a detailed and rigorous literacy curriculum. It was developed in extensive and ongoing consultation with reading professionals. The result is a lively, educational blend of phonics and other teaching methods for kindergarten and first grade students.
The TV show’s characters, lion cubs Lionel (age 7) and Leona (age 4) serve as role models for younger viewers. Cleo and Theo are playful, understanding, and literary parents, who eagerly demonstrate the power and pleasure of literacy.
The lions are joined by a cast of characters who play specific roles in reinforcing the literacy curriculum. Martha Reader and the Vowelles, a Motown-style vocal group, entertain with a repertoire comprising only vowel sounds. The Vowelles are just one example of how Between the Lions addresses phonics instruction. Cliff Hanger, the star of a continuing adventure series, helps to showcase key words and sounds.
For more information, visit the Pascagoula Library at 3214 Pascagoula Street or call 796-3060.
Fans of the Harry Potter book series, by author J. K. Rowling, had fun at the special program celebrating the release of the final book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." More than 60 Potter fans from coast libraries attended this system-wide program.
Participants were encouraged to dress as a favorite Harry Potter character for the costume contest. Prizes for best costumes were awarded. Other activities were a visit to Diagon Alley, a sorting ceremony, trivia contests, Hogwarts classes, Quidditch matches, and more.
