Library System celebrates Black History Month with "Da Storyweaver"
The public is invited to three free performances by Nationally-known storyteller Terrence Roberts also known as "Da Storyweaver."
Terrence is a master storyteller who draws both children and adults into his web with his animated and interactive style causing both to spontaneously burst out with laughter or jump with surprise at a ghost story.
Public performances include: Tuesday, Feb. 26, 10 a.m., at the Lucedale-George County Public Library
Tuesday, Feb. 26, 6 p.m., at the Pascagoula Public Library
Wednesday, Feb. 27, 10 a.m., at the Ocean Springs Municipal Library
Roberts is a griot; a storyteller who weaves his stories like the web of his favorite character Anansi the Spider. Roberts is a collector of tales worldwide but is most known for his African and African American folktales. He takes his listeners back to the village square in West Africa waiting for the Anansi story for the day.
Some of Terrence Roberts' presentations are: Anansi Stories, Parables About People, Brother Rabbit Stories, and Stories From Around The World.

Free Summer Reading Programs at area Libraries - Get a schedule!
See week four photos - Gautier | Moss Point | See Owl's Video! |
Registration for the 2012 summer reading program begins Tuesday, May 29, at all Jackson-George Regional Library System locations. The reading program for children is designed to help kids discover the pleasure of reading. This year "Dream Big: Read!" programming will let children enjoy nighttime themed adventures and enjoy the fun of reading.

A full schedule of events will inspire students to be active and interested in reading all summer long. All summer programs bring dozens of free programs and events right to your neighborhood; puppets, story-times, special guests and so much more - guaranteed to entertain young and old alike.
Weekly programs for each of three age groups will include; pre-school storytime, grade-school programs, and suspense themed "Own the Night" Teen programs.
"Every year more and more children are reached by our programs," said JGRLS Youth Services Coordinator Bethany Carlisle. "We always have families moving to our area and we encourage them to get a library card and enjoy the fun and learning activities. We hope kids and their parents will come and enjoy great programs for all ages."
A reading record is filled out for each child who registers. Each time the child visits the library, the books he or she has read will be recorded on their own reading record. Certificates of completion will be presented to those who meet reading goals.
When children are free to choose their own reading materials, wonderful things happen. Often children who are resistant to reading books during the school year find a topic of interest and read about things they like over the summer.
Parents of younger children are urged to enroll their preschool children in the Read-To-Me programs and to attend the regular story time activities at the libraries. A wide selection of new picture books are available that parents can select to read to their children.
The Jackson-George Regional Library System is comprised of eight branch libraries serving the two counties and surrounding areas. All locations provide free access to a large collection of books, DVDs, audio books on CD and tape, and music CDs, Internet and free WiFi; research databases, newspapers, and magazines. The library system branches continue to serve as cultural centers, presenting the highest quality programming, exhibits, and free events for children, teens and adults of all ages.
